What Does My Child Really Need to Start School?

And so it begins - the search for the perfect bento box, backpack and (thanks COVID) face masks. Parenting forums are filled with questions, “Will someone help my child use the bathroom?” and “Is there a water bottle that’s guaranteed not to leak?” And underneath these endless queries is the question, “Is my child ready for school?”

Sometimes it feels easier to focus on picking out the right lunch box. I’m a sensitive parent of a sensitive child - transitions are always hard and this is a big one! Could we just fast forward through the first couple weeks? Since that isn’t an option, I’ve been researching and reflecting on what being prepared means and looks like. Knowing I can’t control everything, what am I hoping to achieve?

Success to me looks like:

  • I feel confident my child has the necessary skills and supplies to avoid unnecessary frustration

  • I’ve set the stage for my child to have a positive relationship with their teacher

  • We’ve had the opportunity to explore my child’s feelings about starting school

  • I’ve reflected on my child’s temperament and made a plan to reflects their unique needs

Yes, picking out a lunchbox would be much more straightforward.

Because I do anticipate this to be a challenge for our family I’m pulling in all my resources,

  • How to use matchmaking to build rapport between my child and their teacher

  • How to use bridging to help my child feel connected even when we are apart

  • How PLAY helps us accomplish all of this!

  • with detailed insight from a veteran kindergarten teacher with her take on what skills are most important for a smooth start

I’ve spent years learning and practicing these concepts with my two children and I’ll walk you through how it all works. Everything you learn will strengthen your relationship and help you through transitions and milestones yet to come

So let’s do this! I’m running my workshop, Starting School with Confidence and Connection on June 5th at 1PM.

1 hour and includes recording, guided journal and cheat sheet. $25
